Essential Driver Training

EDT — the 12 lessons, explained

Essential Driver Training is the mandatory course every learner car driver in Ireland completes before the test. Here's what the twelve lessons cover, how the logbook works, and how to get the most from each one.

What is EDT?

EDT is a structured programme of twelve one-to-one lessons with an approved driving instructor. Each lesson has a specific theme and builds on the last, taking you from car controls all the way to independent driving in busy conditions.

It's mandatory — you must complete all twelve before you can sit your driving test — and every lesson is recorded and signed off in your official EDT logbook.

What the 12 lessons cover

The syllabus moves in a deliberate order, from the basics to real-world driving. Broadly, the twelve lessons progress like this:

  • Car controls, checks and getting moving
  • Correct road positioning and observation
  • Changing direction, junctions and roundabouts
  • Progression, anticipation and sharing the road
  • Manoeuvres — reversing, turnabouts and hill starts
  • Higher speeds, dual carriageways and independent driving

The logbook and sponsor practice

Your EDT logbook records each completed lesson and the practice you do in between. After every lesson your instructor sets you practice goals to work on with a sponsor — a family member or friend who holds a full licence for the category you're learning.

Regular practice between lessons is what makes EDT work. It turns each new skill into a habit, so you arrive at the next lesson ready to build rather than revise.

  • Every EDT lesson is signed off in the logbook
  • Practise between lessons with a full-licence sponsor
  • Display L-plates whenever you drive on your permit
  • Bring your logbook to each lesson

Completing your EDT with Harry

Harry delivers the full EDT programme in a calm, patient, step-by-step way, in either a manual or automatic dual-control car. Because he knows the Mallow routes inside out, the skills you learn are the ones you'll actually use on test day.

Take the twelve as a package or one at a time — and add a pre-test lesson near the end to pull everything together.

Frequently asked

How many EDT lessons do I have to do?+

Twelve. They're mandatory for learner car drivers and must be completed before you can sit your driving test.

Do EDT lessons expire?+

Your EDT record stays with your learner permit. If your permit lapses for a long time you may need to check your status — but completed lessons are logged in your logbook.

Can I do all 12 in a block?+

You can, but you'll get more from them with practice in between. Spreading them out and practising with a sponsor is the RSA's intended approach.
