The five steps, in order
Every learner takes the same route to a full licence. Knowing the order up front helps you plan — some steps have waiting periods, so it pays to start early.
- 1Pass the Driver Theory Test
A computer-based multiple-choice test on the rules of the road and safe driving. You need to pass this before you can apply for a learner permit.
- 2Apply for your learner permit
Apply through the NDLS with your theory-test pass, an eyesight report and the required ID. Your first car permit is category B.
- 3Complete your 12 EDT lessons
Essential Driver Training — twelve structured lessons with an approved instructor, each logged in your official EDT logbook.
- 4Practise between lessons
Build hours with an accompanying full-licence driver (your sponsor), displaying L-plates, to lock in each EDT skill.
- 5Sit your driving test
Once you've held your permit for at least six months and finished your EDT, book your test at the Mallow test centre.

How long does it take?
There's no fixed timeline — it depends how quickly you build confidence and how much you practise between lessons. What is fixed is the six-month minimum: you must hold your learner permit for at least six months before your driving test.
Most learners spread their 12 EDT lessons over a few months, practising with a sponsor in between, then add a pre-test lesson or two close to the test date. Booking lessons regularly keeps momentum and skills fresh.

Do I need to pass the theory test before lessons?+
